"Be Sun Safe: Solar Sensitive UV Beads Science Program" at La Salle Library

Where:
La Salle Public Library

When
Tuesday, July 17, 2018

On Tuesday, July 17th, at 12:30 p.m. the La Salle Public Library will host "Be Sun Safe."  What does it take to shield oneself from the harmful rays of the sun yet still enjoy summer outdoors?  In this fun, science program, youth will gain an understanding of the power of the Sun's energy.  Using common test materials like sunscreen, a t-shirt, and water, participants will experiment with using solar sensitive beads  These beads, normally white, will change color, when exposed to sunlight or other sources of UV light.   Participants will discover just how much protection comes from clothing, water, and sunscreen.   After experimenting, youth will use their beads to create an adorable Sun Critter.  Handouts with additional ideas for experiments will be available to take home.

This program is free and open to the public and is best suited for youth ages 6 and up.   Because the activity includes small beads that may pose a safety hazard to young children, parents should determine the appropriateness of the activity for their children.   Children under the age of 8, must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
