"March of the Women: Music for the 100th Anniversary of Suffrage"
On Tuesday, June 4th at 6:00 p.m. the La Salle Public Library will host Historian and Hammered Dulcimer Musician, Phil Passen, when he presents, "March of the Women: Music for the 100th Anniversary of Suffrage."
2019 marks 100 years since Congress passed the 19th Amendment-forbidding to deny the right to vote on the basis of sex. Illinois was one of the first three states, along with Michigan and Wisconsin, to ratify the nineteenth amendment, just six days after Congress passed it. Besides being one of the first three states to ratify the nineteenth amendment, Illinois was home to Jane Addams, a crusader for women's rights as well as the rights of the downtrodden. In this unique musical presentation, Phil Passen will tell the story of women's suffrage from the mid-nineteenth century through the twenty-first century using songs that demonstrate the changing roles of women in American society.
Few musicians play the hammered dulcimer. Fewer still sing while accompanying themselves on this fascinating instrument. Phil Pasen does both. Phil regularly performs at area libraries and is included in the Best of the Best by the Library Administrators, and Coordinators of Northern Illinois. He also played in the World Symphony Orchestra's performance of the Lord of the Rings Symphony at Chicago's Auditorium Theater.
This program is free and open to the public. It is made possible through funding by Illinois Humanities. For more information, please call the Library at 815-223-2341.
